Purpose and Content

International students and doctoral students selected one paper related to their research topics, and presented the content while connecting it to their own research. This seminar is a good chance for participants to improve their presentation skills, and to get to know the broad topics of transportation research.

Transit Network Design Problem

Yu, B., Kong, L., Sun, Y., Yao, B., & Gao, Z. (2015). A bi-level programming for bus lane network design. Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, 55, 310-327.

This paper proposes a bi-level programming model to solve the design problem for bus lane distribution in multi-modal transport networks. The upper level model aims at minimizing the average travel time of travelers, as well as minimizing the difference of passengers’ comfort among all the bus lines by optimizing bus frequencies. The lower level model is a multi-modal transport network equilibrium model for the joint modal split/traffic assignment problem. The column generation algorithm, the branch-and-bound algorithm and the method of successive averages are comprehensively applied in this paper for the solution of the bi-level model.

Optimal matching in large-scale ridesharing market requires some techniques to mitigate calculation cost for evaluating feasible patterns. Introducing “Search Theory” for mitigating the enumeration cost for combinatorial problem is one of my directions. This paper is tackling mitigation of enumeration by sampling based on the stochastic nature of the variables

A vehicle dispatching plan was developed in order to:
- Minimize passenger waiting time
- Minimize denied boardings
- Realize more efficient utilization of available resources in terms of vehicle capacity especially during peak period/(improving capacity utilization
- Meet the passenger demand

This study proposes a new index for evaluating locations that considers pedestrian activity zones and evaluates them from the perspective of network characteristics using spatial data. Validity of the index is discussed by examining the relationship and consistency between the results of the analysis and the historical formation process of the city. This paper aims to obtain suggestions for contemporary plaza planning from a study of the medieval plaza in the Old Town of Barcelona.

Land-Use and Transport Interaction Model

Bravo, M., Briceño, L., Cominetti, R., Cortés, C. E., & Martínez, F. (2010). An integrated behavioral model of the land-use and transport systems with network congestion and location externalities. Transportation Research Part B: Methodological, 44(4), 584-596.

This paper models big urban areas for planning purpose. Dynamic interaction between land-use and transport are jointly analyzed as long- term equilibrium. Two types of externality (road congestion and location externalities) are newly considered. The model is discrete choice-based land-choice and transport choice model and existence of equilibria are proved by a fixed-point theorem.

This paper is about understanding of the two models ; SEM and DCM by modelling the effective connectivity among the states using fMRI time series data (fMRI: Functional magnetic resonance imaging.) This paper explains how those models are different from each other, and how modulating variables are affected on connectivity and How state activities are changed according to those mediations.

This paper finds the optimal infrastructure investments allocations across regions. They fit a quantitative trade model to data on the geographic distribution of economic activity, and find the impact of change in trade costs between specific locations They Developed a framework for a Neoclassical Trade Model with labour mobility to study optimal transport networks in general equilibrium spatial models The model is applied to European road networks
